Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was forced to close for several hours when dozens of them drifted across the airspace of Lithuania.
Air Travel Interruptions
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting six thousand travelers, with officials warning that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the aviation facility.

Criminal Methodology
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather elements rather than more controllable drones, authorities explained that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by contraband transporters - they are more economical than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Security Service Goals
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to seize the largest possible amounts of illegal goods and to arrest masterminds and involved individuals so that such operations become unprofitable and do not pose risk to commercial air travel."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of heightened tension in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across the continent.
Similar occurrences in nearby states have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout European airspace.
