Our Top Album of 2025: Rosalía's Masterpiece Secures the Number One Place.

On the surface, this work could seem closer to a challenging scholarly challenge than the latest pop record from an artist whose previous hit featured a global K-pop icon. Broken into four separate sections and voiced in thirteen languages, it is a breathtaking classical-tinged opus that delves into female mystique, religious transcendence, and physical transformation, frequently via the lens of different female saints. The end of a love affair—a theme treated with raw honesty elsewhere—soars skyward on this record, carried by the constant presence of a full orchestra and input from an award-winning composer within an extensive list of collaborators. The pure daring alone renders the work of contemporary pop stars look rather modest.

Rising Above Academic Exercise

That Lux manages to avoid overly intellectual posturing is nearly a miracle, and complete praise belonging to the artist. Although it's not the first time project to blend the past and the present, the stakes feel far higher on Lux, and the tightrope walk far more pronounced. What truly elevates her fourth release, beyond its complex tunes, dense arrangements, and inherent theatricality, proves to be a core spirit of playfulness. Similar to the iconic artist during her peak, you find a wondrous sense to Rosalía's voice which sweeps the listener into its tornado. When she's breaking your heart apart, you nevertheless desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Signature Example of Exuberance

That exuberant energy comes forth clearly on the stunning Italian ballad about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched whirlpool for more than four moments. Then, all the music drops silent, and there's a spontaneous giggle followed by a declaration prior to a hilariously exaggerated string crescendo thuds in with comedic force. The song then shifts to the frenetic single driven by galloping strings, a powerful choral group, and a cameo role from none other than Björk.

"The magic with this album is that you never exactly understand—nor wish to predict—what it will go next."

Nearly each track concludes at a totally distinct place from how it started. One moment examines the transient nature of fame over a featherlight symphony before disintegrating in electronic chaos. Another, a song that recalls her previous trap-infused work starts off moody and sinister, featuring prowling beats, before sudden flamenco handclaps and a heavenly choir enter to smooth the song's jagged edges.

The Balance Of Experiment & Pop

Another crucial achievement on Lux involves straddling the line between radical innovation and mainstream accessibility. This is little coincidence that the album has achieved her highest-charting work to crack the upper reaches of major markets: its heart contains a collection of truly catchy hits. A song sung primarily in the English language swells on a chorus that feels to collect increasingly infectious hooks while it spirals skyward. This trick is echoed by a different powerful track that expands and contracts, intertwining multiple tunes as a complex weave.

  • A dance-infused number seduces via its jaunty, theatrical drama and an anthemic chorus.
  • In its words, it aligns the cultural impact of contemporary breakup anthems, lambasting a former partner labeled an "psychological terrorist".
  • Across these tracks, the singing have a painted-on edge, like a storybook figure concealing a knife: "Gold medal in acting like a scoundrel / You've the podium of letdown."

A Maximalist Banquet for the Soul

This album represents popular music on a grand scale, an ambitious grasp for capital-A Art in an era of looming artificial sameness. It rejects self-absorption for glorious elevation, creating an over-the-top spectacle that masterfully controls its built-in ridiculousness. It is a deep well of hidden gems that requires time to completely explore but never seem like a chore. Where some big pop albums of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, Lux is a sumptuous banquet at which the guests at it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter between discussions about historical figures, the galvanizing sensation of soul-shattering sadness, and common stories about hopeless men. It is a modern-day theatrical production from music's truly restlessly inventive visionary.
