Individuals Coming Off Slimming Injections Put On Weight Four Times Faster Than Those on Conventional Diets

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that people who discontinue popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover reduced body mass much more quickly than those who end traditional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people can lose a large proportion of their total mass while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"Users purchasing such drugs need to be informed of the risk of rapid weight regain when the treatment ends," cautioned researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Analyzing Therapies

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, contrasted the effects of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually see a more gradual weight regain—approximately 0.1 kg a month—once they finish.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts propose the way of the drugs accounts for the heightened rebound.

These medications imitate a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production might result in the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.

"Discontinuation of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making overeating a significant risk."

A Lifelong Issue?

The NHS recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

Professionals argue that, due to the high risk of weight regain, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is supported by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "emphasize the long-term nature of obesity," comparing it to managing conditions like hypertension.

User Testimonies

People who have discontinued the medication explain a sudden return of hunger.

"I experienced something activating and you become starving," recalled one woman.

This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not developed lasting lifestyle or habit modifications during therapy.

Significant Interest

Figures suggest that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.

  • Adoption is more common among females than males.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the greatest usage rates.
  • Many access the medications through private healthcare rather than the NHS.

Ultimately, researchers stress that while the jabs are powerful agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone solution and lasting health benefits hinges on combined lifestyle support.
